I undantagsfall ägde den 38:e upplagan av 24 Hours of Le Mans rum den 28:e och 29:e september efter de franska oroligheterna i maj 1968. Ford körde in sin GT40 som vid den tiden var favoriten efter två raka segrar under det mytomspunna Sarthe-loppet. Nummer 9, i händerna på Pedro Rodriguez och Lucien Bianchi, vann dagen efter och 331 varv. Denna seger förstärkte den amerikanska tillverkarens strypgrepp på hållbara bilar. Gulf-målningen och dess himmelsblå och orange färger blev definitivt en del av GT-mytologin från den dagen och framåt.

Exceptionally, the 38th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans took place on the 28th and 29th September following the French unrest of May 1968. Ford engaged their GT40 that was at the time the favourite following two consecutive wins during the mythic Sarthe race. The number 9, in the hands of Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi, were victorious the following day and 331 laps. This victory reinforced the stranglehold of the American manufacturer on enduring cars. The Gulf livery and its sky blue and orange colours definitively became part of the GT mythology from that day onwards.
